CBS Consumer Products Launches Search for Exceptional Fan Art During Star Trek’s Ships of the Line Panel at Comic-Con International 2014 in San Diego

NEW YORK– July 25, 2014 – The Star Trek mission to travel “where no man has gone before” would not be possible if it were not for the amazing and awe-inspiring ships that carry the crew through the galaxies. These vessels, celebrated for nearly 50 years and honored in the best-selling annual Ships of the Line calendar, will for the first time feature designs created by fans.

Last night, CBS Consumer Products announced the launch of the “Star Trek Ships of the Line Design Contest” during a panel that focused on these very ships. The contest opens today through September 2^nd on StarTrek.com. Fans can submit original starship designs for the chance to be immortalized in the 50^th anniversary 2016 Star Trek Ships of the Line calendar.

Calling on the inspiration of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the dozens of other ships that populate the Star Trek universe, designs for the ships can be submitted in paint, pencils, ink, markers, pastels or charcoal.  Computer-generated images are also acceptable. Once the submission process closes in September, a panel of judges will review submissions based on the following criteria: appearance/quality of image, appropriateness to contest theme, composition/layout and attention to detail. At the close of the judging period, 13 designs will be selected to be featured in the highly sought after and eagerly anticipated Ships of the Line calendar, which displays the amazing artistry and dramatic depictions of Star Trek ships in horizontal panoramic format.

“Each year the Ships of the Line calendar is one of the most popular fan draws; the 2016 anniversary version will be all the more special with prize-winning art,” said Liz Kalodner, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Consumer Products. “We can’t wait to see what the fans create.”

The announcement of the contest was made during the Star Trek’s Ships of the Line panel at  Comic-Con on Thursday, July 24^th. The Q&A moderated by Ben Robinson, editor for the long-running Star Trek Fact Files and the manager of Eaglemoss’ new Starship Collection, featured a team of Star Trek designers that took fans into the art department to showcase the art and inspiration of Star Trek’s most famous Ships of the Line and explore why starships have fascinated and inspired fans for nearly 50 years. Panelists included John Eaves, Andrew Probert, Doug Drexler, John Goodson, Greg Jein and Mike Okuda.

From the original Star Trek series and the bridge of USS Enterprise NCC-1701 comes Chief Helmsman, Hikaru Sulu, one of the iconic series’ most celebrated crew members. Today Marks the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek and what an long time it has been since it debuted. Last weekend was the Star Trek: Missions convention in New York City and we got the chance to cover it. There were many booths and products for display including the NASA section which i found very interesting once i seen it. The NASA section had displays on the future satellites and jets and spaceships that are currently being developed along with stardust and other things that were from mars. Call me weird on this, but i actually like science.

The main floor for Star Trek: Missions had the set from the very first season of Star Trek and i spoke to an guy over there about it and he told me that there is an whole museum dedicated to Star Trek as well (click this link for more info http://www.intrepidmuseum.org/Startrek.aspx)

There was also an section for the upcoming Playstation 4 version of Star Trek Online where players from all over the world can play which also has cross-platform capability to the PC and XBOX ONE version.

There were a few panels that i wanted to go to but i was only able to go to two and they were Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Next Generation. The original cast from both of those seasons were there to talk about their roles in their respective shows along with promoting Star Trek: Discovery which will be coming in 2017.

Overall, this was an great event but i think the panel room situation could have been handled better but i would come back next year.

One of the biggest events of the year is the annual Rhode Island Comic Con, a celebration of pop culture, Comics and video games and it is one week away where it will begin on Nov. 10-12 in downtown Providence.

Having filled both the Rhode Island Convention Center and the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, Comic Con is expanding again, to the adjacent Omni Providence Hotel, where it will use at least one of the ballrooms.

The press relations manager Susan Sores, has estimated that it will attract over 100,000 people for the three days the event will take place and myself and Fidelina Roman will cover the show and bring you the latest news from Rhode Island Comic Con for the days that we will be there.

The show will also have panel discussions with many of the stars of TV and movies such as The Walking Dead, Star Wars, Stranger Things, Luke Cage, The Power Rangers, Star Trek and much more.

There will also be autograph and photograph opportunities, Gaming (video games and table top), kids activities, collectables and toy vendors too.

Rhode Island Comic Con will have a film festival for the first time this year called Geekfest and it will have its own panel, screening and awards.

It is the biggest show of the year in the smallest state of the United States and it will attract a huge widespread of fans and cosplayers.
